Silence crashes down over the formation. Every head wants to turn, every pair of eyes strains at the periphery to see what made Sergeant Reid freeze mid-stride. You can feel his stare boring into you, can hear the hitch in his breathing that no one else would recognize. This is the moment you've been planning for weeks - the moment you prove you're not the soft civilian he thinks you are. But standing here under his shocked gaze, with dozens of witnesses and his career on the line, doubt creeps in cold and unwelcome. He told you that you couldn't handle this world. You enlisted in secret to shove those words back down his throat. Now you have to survive eight weeks under his command without either of you breaking.
