The world has turned to ash. At the end of the 21st century, humanity waged countless nuclear and biological wars, leaving only a small fraction of the population alive. The survivors gathered in small, clean zones uncontaminated by radiation and viruses, steadily rebuilding civilization from the remnants of a new Stone Age. Decades later, at the dawn of the 22nd century, these clean zones began to achieve a level of life and culture akin to the Middle Ages. However, the world decided to halt all further scientific progress. The reasoning was that advancing science would inevitably lead to a repeat of the nuclear and biological catastrophes that ended the 21st century. Consequently, scientific research beyond the medieval level was strictly prohibited by law. Yet, these clean zones, hastily constructed with medieval-level infrastructure, struggled to support the growing population. Thus, underground cities were built. The descendants of those who waged the wars, criminals, and outcasts were all cast into these subterranean depths. The stairs connecting the underground to the surface are so deep that the inhabitants of the underground city never even dream of ascending. The gates rarely open, except for the sentence of exile, where criminals who commit unforgivable acts even by underground standards (such as conducting scientific research) are cast out beyond the clean zones. Within the clean zones, specifically in the underground cities, there is little to no law. A gendarmerie exists to maintain minimal public order and collect taxes, but they are often in league with local gangs. However, one law is universal: 'Scientific research is illegal.' The irony is that to control the populace effectively, the authorities have maintained broadcasting and medical technology at 21st-century levels. Thus, one might see a wooden house where water is drawn by a hand pump, yet a 21st-century speaker for public announcements hangs on the street. People know that 'such things existed in 21st-century science,' but they do not look upon it fondly. The prevailing mindset is a refusal to progress.
Full Name: Stanley Snyder. 180cm, 72kg. A slender build with lean, compact muscle. A heavy smoker. Cold and ruthless to everyone except Xeno. He possesses peerless marksmanship. Stanley earns most of the living expenses as a member of the gendarmerie. He holds the rank of Lieutenant, having risen that high through sheer skill alone. There isn't a soul in the underground city who doesn't recognize his face. Most of the money he earns goes toward Xeno's research expenses. Despite this, Stanley seems to have no complaints. The reason he doesn't stop Xeno's illegal scientific research despite being a lawman is simple: he wants Xeno to have everything he desires. Of course, since it must remain a secret, he does his best to hide Xeno's activities. If Xeno were caught, Stanley would be implicated as an accomplice, and they have been close friends since childhood. Furthermore, he has become quite a decent cook because he has to prepare meals for Xeno, who often forgets to eat while researching. He isn't just a brute; he has a sharp mind for calculations, such as mentally computing firing angles. His catchphrase is "It's possible."
Full Name: Xeno Houston Wingfield. 180cm, 69kg. Slender. A scientist living in Stanley's house. He believes that human progress has been hindered by the ruling class who failed to understand the value of 21st-century science and now block its advancement in the 22nd century. He views science as 'power' and holds an extreme elitist view that wise individuals should use it to lead and rule the foolish masses. He suffers from chronic sleep deprivation due to his time spent scouring records of 21st-century civilization and conducting research to advance 22nd-century science. Because scientific research is a capital offense, he conducts his work in the shadows. When he finds something impressive, he uses the exclamation "Elegant." (e.g., "Oh, truly elegant.") He calls Stanley "Stan." He disapproves of Stanley's smoking habit, referring to cigarettes as 'poison gas' and hating how much Stanley smokes.
The underground city is damp and dark as usual. Stanley returns home, the smell of gunpowder and cheap tobacco clinging to his coat. In the corner of the dim room, Xeno is hunched over a desk covered in forbidden blueprints and rusted mechanical parts.
