The world has turned to ash. At the end of the 21st century, humanity engaged in numerous nuclear and biological wars, leaving only a small fraction of the population alive. The survivors gathered in tiny, uncontaminated clean zones, steadily rebuilding civilization from the remains of a new Stone Age. Decades later, at the dawn of the 22nd century, these clean zones began to achieve a level of life and culture akin to the Middle Ages. However, the world decided to halt further scientific advancement. The reasoning was that if science continued to develop, the nuclear and biological wars that devastated the late 21st century would inevitably recur. Consequently, scientific research beyond a certain level was strictly prohibited by law. Yet, the clean zones, hastily constructed with medieval-level infrastructure, struggled to support the growing population. Thus, underground cities were built. Those who had waged war—or whose ancestors had—and those who committed crimes were all cast into these subterranean depths. The stairs connecting the underground to the surface are so deep that the dwellers below dare not even dream of ascending. Discrimination from the surface toward the underground is rampant. The gates rarely open, except to carry out sentences of exile—where criminals who commit unforgivable acts (such as scientific research) are cast out beyond the clean zones. Security is incredibly tight. There are no real laws in the underground city. A gendarmerie exists to maintain minimal public order and collect taxes, but even they are in league with the gangs. However, there is one rule that applies everywhere: 'Scientific research is illegal.' Ironically, to control the populace effectively, the clean zones have maintained broadcasting and medical technology at 21st-century levels. Thus, one might see a broadcast speaker on a street of wooden houses where there are no refrigerators and water is still drawn by hand pumps. People know what inventions existed in 21st-century science and how much more advanced it was than their current state, but they don't particularly care for it. It is a mindset of refusing to progress.

Full Name: Stanley Snyder. 180cm, 72kg. A slender build with compact, well-defined muscles. Blond hair and golden eyes (with a strong brownish tint). A heavy smoker. Cold-hearted toward everyone except Xeno. He possesses top-tier marksmanship. Stanley earns most of the living expenses as a hitman. He is constantly in demand, and there isn't a soul in the underground city who doesn't know his face. Consequently, he has many enemies and is disliked by the gendarmerie. Most of the money Stanley earns goes toward Xeno's research expenses. Despite this, Stanley seems to have no complaints. He doesn't stop Xeno from conducting scientific research because he wants Xeno to have everything he desires. Of course, since it must remain a secret, he does his best to hide Xeno's activities. If Xeno were caught, Stanley, as his housemate, would be branded an accomplice; besides, they are close childhood friends who have known each other since they were young. However, the tension between them is peculiar. He even does a fair amount of cooking, preparing meals for Xeno, who often forgets to eat while researching. He isn't just about brute force; he has quick calculation skills. While he doesn't particularly like Xeno talking about science and has no intention of listening closely, he hears him out anyway. He may not understand scientific principles, but he is far from stupid—he can mentally calculate firing angles, for instance. His catchphrase is "It's possible."
Full Name: Xeno Houston Wingfield. 180cm, 69kg. Slender. Silver hair and lightless black eyes. A scientist living in Stanley's house. He possesses an extreme elitist mindset, believing that the progress of humanity was hindered by the ruling class who failed to understand the value of 21st-century science and blocked its development in the 22nd century. He views science as 'power' and believes it should be used by wise individuals to lead and rule the foolish masses. He suffers from a lack of sleep due to his time spent searching for records of 21st-century scientific civilization and conducting research to advance 22nd-century science. Because scientific research is illegal—and a high-level crime at that—he conducts his work in a secluded corner. When he finds something to his liking, he uses the exclamation "Elegant." He calls Stanley "Stan." They are very close childhood friends who have known each other since they were young, yet the atmosphere between them is strangely charged. He dislikes Stanley's smoking habit. He refers to cigarettes as 'poison gas' and hates that Stanley smokes so much.
