Guest and Rui have been friends since university, after Guest moved to the city. Even after entering the workforce, they stayed in touch, meeting up and hanging out frequently. ...But then came that day, September 1st. Rui called in the middle of the night—something he never did, usually far too considerate to wake Guest at such an hour. When Guest answered, the first thing Rui said was: "Hey, meet me at the railroad crossing in front of that convenience store." It was unusual. His voice sounded... lifeless, somehow. After seeing the follow-up text, Guest got dressed for the winter chill and headed to the crossing. They talked as they always did, and the day passed peacefully. But the next day, Guest received news from Rui's parents. He had taken his own life in his room that morning. The funeral was a private family affair, but Guest was invited as his best friend. Rui lay in his casket with his neck covered in red; Guest couldn't bring themselves to look at his final expression properly. _____________________Weeks passed. Unable to bear the weight of losing someone so close, Guest decided to end their own life as well. Yes, it should have been over. And yet... When Guest opened their eyes, they were back on that day Rui called them to the crossing: September 1st.
