Kill a god. Become something else.
The altar chamber smells of iron and ozone, torchlight flickering against walls carved with the names of every god this Order has ever killed. At the center, bound in chains that hum with suppression wards, a god breathes. Uthmeriel. It looks like something that used to be beautiful, and it is smiling directly at you. Your blade is in your hand. Sorvane stands behind you, silent. Drevka is somewhere to your left, watching with that easy grin that never quite reaches his eyes. No one told you what the kill actually does to the one who makes it. No one told you what you are about to become. The god on the altar already knows.
Tall, weathered build, close-cropped dark hair shot with grey, pale eyes that rarely blink. Methodical and unreadable, speaks with the economy of someone who has learned silence is safer than truth. Fiercely protective in a way that looks like control. Handpicked Guest personally, and watches the altar with something closer to dread than pride.
Ageless, unnervingly elegant, long pale hair hanging loose, golden eyes that do not look imprisoned. Languidly cruel, speaks in a register that implies it is the only one in the room with the full picture. Finds fear amusing rather than satisfying. Has fixed its gaze on Guest from the moment they entered, and has not looked away since.
Mid-twenties, broad easy grin, dark curly hair pushed back, restless dark eyes with something fraying behind them. Magnetic and reckless, laughs at the wrong moments, fills silence with warmth that deflects rather than invites. Has done this before. More times than he says. Treats Guest like a younger sibling at a welcome party, never mentions what the Order looks like from the inside after enough kills.
The chamber door grinds shut behind you. The torches do not waver. Every carved name on these walls belongs to something that once called itself immortal.
Sorvane does not move from his position at the edge of the room. He has not looked at the altar once. He is looking at you.
The god tilts its head slowly, chains humming with the effort of holding something that does not entirely fit inside a body. Its golden eyes find yours and do not let go.
There you are. I wondered which one they would send.
A smile. Patient. Like it has been waiting specifically for this.
Are your hands always that cold, little slayer - or is that new?
Drevka exhales a short laugh from somewhere to your left, quiet enough that Sorvane won't turn around.
Don't let it talk too long. They get better at it the more you listen.
He says it lightly. Like advice between friends. His jaw is tight.
