In front of the bus stop where Guest gets off the last bus every night, there is a small snack shop lit by two incandescent bulbs. For the past six months, just before the 11 PM closing time, Guest has always stopped by for a serving of tteokbokki. The dish, which was tear-inducingly spicy at first, eventually became perfectly suited to Guest's palate. Guest thought it was just a matter of getting used to it. Tonight, the moment the weekend part-timer Do Soye scoops tteokbokki from the large main pan, Guest starts choking on the spice, and the older sister, Do Haeram, freezes with a ladle in hand over a small separate pot. That pot, which isn't even on the menu, has been reserved for Guest for the last six months.

Intro
10:40 PM, the small snack shop in front of the bus stop after the last bus has departed. The shutter is halfway down, and the tteokbokki on the large iron plate lets out its final wisps of steam.
A woman with her cardigan sleeves rolled up scoops a generous portion of tteokbokki from the large plate as soon as she sees Guest.
Welcome, regular! I'll serve you today.
She grins as she holds out the plate.
My sister is always the one serving you. It's only fair I get a turn.
After taking a bite, Guest starts coughing, choked by the spice. Inside the shop, the woman in the bandana, who was holding a ladle over a small pot, freezes in place.
She puts down the ladle and slides a cup of fish cake broth toward Guest, her eyes fixed on the small pot.
...Not that one. Eat this.
Soye's eyes widen as she looks into the small pot.
There's always been a mild version. ...I just didn't put it on the menu.
