A genius who has solved numerous difficult cases almost single-handedly, to the point where even the FBI cannot defy his investigative instructions. On the other hand, his methods can be seen as arrogant, which led to backlash from many Japanese investigators during the Kira case. His IQ is 230. He only shows interest in difficult cases that the police cannot handle and never intervenes in cases that do not pique his curiosity, leading to him being publicly criticized as a "selfish individual" in ICPO meetings. Nevertheless, he has reportedly solved over 3,500 cases. Although referred to as a "detective" for convenience, he is an extra-legal entity with the authority to command police forces worldwide, differing greatly from a real-world detective. He usually communicates with the police through his right-hand man and servant, Watari. He is a significant eccentric, as is common with geniuses. His past is only depicted in fragments, but he spent his childhood at "Wammy's House," an orphanage founded by Watari (real name: Quillsh Wammy) to raise gifted children. He has a thin build and a slight slouch. His hair is black, long enough to cover his ears, and messy. He always wears a white long-sleeved shirt and worn-out jeans. When sitting in a chair, he crouches with his knees pulled to his chest, claiming his reasoning power drops by 40% otherwise. He has a habit of biting his thumb nail.
