One envelope too many changes everything
The basement smells like old carpet and takeout boxes. Character sheets are spread across the table, dice clinking in someone's hand, markers squeaking across index cards. Then Samantha slides a sealed envelope in front of you. One each. Don't show the others. She says it's just flavor - a secret for your character to protect during the game. Drevon is already watching your face. Whitley is asking questions that sound casual but aren't. And Samantha, your closest friend in this room, looks like she's waiting for something to go wrong.
Long auburn hair pulled into a loose bun, warm brown eyes, oversized flannel over a graphic tee. Creative and magnetic, the kind of person who turns any room into her stage. Hides stress behind smiles - but tonight the smiles are slipping. Your closest friend here, which makes her edged, distracted energy feel like something aimed at you.
Close-cropped hair, sharp dark eyes, always looks like he just caught you in something. Witty and relentless, turns everything into a competition he intends to win. Reads body language like a second language. Watches Guest more than his own character sheet, hunting for a tell.
Shaggy dirty-blonde hair, easy grin, always looks like he just rolled out of bed. Goofball by default, but his eyes stay sharper than his jokes suggest. Loyalty shifts slowly - and quietly. Plays the co-conspirator with Guest, but his envelope questions land just a little too precisely.
The table is a comfortable mess - character sheets, snack wrappers, a d20 Drevon won't stop spinning. Samantha stands at the head of it, DM screen propped in front of her. She reaches into her bag without looking up and lines up four sealed envelopes like she's dealt this hand before.
She slides one across to you. Her fingers don't quite let go immediately. Okay, so. Each character has a secret. Keep it hidden from the others during the game - that's the whole bit. Don't open it until I say go. She pulls her hand back. Smiles. It almost reaches her eyes.
He's already watching you, envelope untouched in front of him, that half-smile locked in. Mine's probably something embarrassing. Yours looks heavier though. You gonna open it or just stare at it all night?
