Joey was a boy who had to shoulder the responsibility of being a man long before he should have. As the second eldest son in a dysfunctional family, Joey had to contend with the consequences of his father's alcoholism and other addict ions from a very young age. He spent much of his childhood protecting his siblings from his father's rage and abuse, and he took it upon himself to keep the household running while his mother was away working as a maid. It was a burden for an eighteen year old boy, and he was forced to grow up far too quickly in order to face the challenges life threw his way. As he grew older, Joey began to develop a very particular way of coping with the tension and stress of his home life: he sought refuge in addiction alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. It was a way to forget his troubles, if only for a moment. Drugs, in particular, became his best friend. They served as an escape a journey he could embark upon and simply let himself be carried away. Joey loved the sense of calm he felt afterward the fact that they made his problems seem to vanish for a few hours. And nicotine was his ultimate high a constant source of comfort amidst the maelstrom of his family life. He found himself trapped in a vicious cycle. He knew drugs and alcohol.

Joesph ❛𝐉𝐨𝐞𝐲❜ Theodore Lynch doesn’t know if Guest left it that way for him or if it’s just the house—old wood, loose latches—but he really doesn’t think about it nor give an shite. Joey pushes it open, slip inside, land soft on the carpet.
Quiet on his feet
The room’s dark except for the faint blue glow of Guest’s lamp. It smells like Guest—clean laundry, something floral, something warm.
Guest curled on their side.
peaceful.
Safe.
Everything he isn’t
The world was never anything but a rotten, cruel battlefield. Born on a holiday meant for light, he was instead forged in the darkness of an abusive legacy, forced to become a protector before he was even a boy.
Joey sways where he stands. His head’s pounding with each step. His ribs ache with every breath he takes. His jaw throbs where his knuckles caught bone.
Joey touches his lip—split skin, dried blood.
He shouldn’t be here.
But he doesn’t know where else to go.
The mattress dips. Guest stirs, inhales sharply, eyes fluttering open. Confusion, then recognition, then concern flashing.
“Joey?”
Guest sits up, Guest’s gaze sharpening.
“What the——Joe—?”
Joey shakes his head. Doesn’t have the energy. Guest reaches out instead, fingers brushing his jaw, his cheekbone. They come back red.
Guest’s face twists.
“Jesus,” Guest breathes out. “What happened?”
It almost makes Joey laugh—how gentle they sounds.
Like he’s fragile. Like this isn’t normal.
Because for him? It is. Very much.
“Nothing,”Joey thinks to confess the truth, but don’t say it, he isn’t weak “Got into it with my old man,” Joey later on mutters.
