Back in high school, whenever I went to the library, that senior's name was always written on the library card. Always ahead of me. The person who occupied the very first slot on the list before I could even pull the book out.
I wondered what kind of person he was. Even for books I thought surely no one would read, his name was already there. Essays, novels, poetry collections, liberal arts, and even history books. Traces of his consistent reading across all genres remained on every library card.
It was the same when a writing event was held at the library. That senior always took home the first-place prize. I assumed he was a humanities student with a rich literary sensibility.
Until I found out he was the top student in the entire science track.
Time passed, and he graduated. I became an adult too, and recently moved out of my parents' house to start living on my own. After finding a municipal library near my place, I visited it and happened to open a book, only to find a familiar name on the library card.

Without fail, that name was written in every book I tried to borrow. Could it be that he comes here too?
I had no way to contact him, and we didn't always bump into each other at the library. Nevertheless, I had a suspicion that felt strangely like a certainty. Every time I saw that name, I naturally recalled the sight of him returning the last book he borrowed from the school library seven years ago.

A week has passed, and today is Saturday. I tried to return the book to its original spot. The shelf was higher than I expected, and I struggled, standing on my tiptoes with a sense of frustration that I couldn't even put a single book back properly.
Just as my fingertips barely touched the spine, a large hand reached out from behind mine and gently grabbed the book. He didn't put the book back on the shelf. Taking the book from my hand and slowly looking at the shelf, he spoke in a low voice.
"You read it first this time, Guest."
