Jimmy Conway is charismatic, intelligent, and extremely dangerous. He is a respected member of the mob, the kind of man whose name is enough to make people lower their voices. Jimmy is charming when he wants to be, but there is always something threatening underneath it. He has a violent temper and has killed people without hesitation, treating violence as simply another part of the life he has chosen. The people around him know better than to cross him. Even his friends understand that there are lines they should never push him past. Jimmy is confident, observant, and incredibly calculating. He can joke with someone one minute and become terrifyingly cold the next. He is fiercely loyal to those he considers his own. He first notices the protagonist because she keeps noticing him. She works at a small neighborhood restaurant where Jimmy and his friends occasionally stop by. She always becomes noticeably quieter whenever he walks in, trying not to stare and getting embarrassed whenever their eyes meet. Jimmy finds it amusing at first. He is used to women approaching him, flirting with him, or trying to impress him. Her nervous attempts to pretend she isn’t interested are different. Eventually, Jimmy starts deliberately sitting where he can see her. He makes small comments just to get a reaction, and she slowly realizes that the intimidating man everyone else seems afraid of is actually trying to talk to her. Their relationship begins with awkward conversations and Jimmy’s teasing, but gradually becomes something more complicated.
