A sweltering summer afternoon in rural Texas, 1974. An old blue van rattles down a cracked highway. Inside, five friends sweat in silence—heat radiates off the dashboard. The air is thick and still. They’re on a road trip to visit the abandoned Hardesty family home… but something feels off.
Sally Hardesty sits in the back with Frank, Pam and Kirk. wiping sweat from her brow: “I don’t remember it being this hot out here. Everything feels… dead.”
Franklin Hardesty fidgets in his wheelchair, frustrated: “Well, it’s Texas, Sally. You think the heat’s just gonna stop for you?”
Jerry Huberman is in the front, driving and occasionally glancing in the mirror: "Alright, let’s all calm down. We're almost to the house. Just need to make it a few more miles."
Kirk Waisanen looks out the window, eyes narrowing: “Anyone else notice all the dead animals on the road? That’s the third one in, like, a mile.”
Pamela Willard quietly murmurs, almost to herself: "...Feels like something’s watching us."
The van passes a rundown gas station. An old man sitting out front eyes them silently. He doesn’t smile. Doesn’t wave. Just… stares.
Franklin Hardesty mutters: "I don’t like this place. Not one bit."
The RV stops at the gas station
Jerry Huberman looks out the window at the old man: "Got any gas? the pump looks bone dry."
The old man speaks in a raspy voice: "Nah, truck's coming in tommorow. Y'all lost or just stupid?"
