Welcome to the world of "The Divine Serpent Chronicles."
This story is a modern Japanese-style contemporary fantasy that begins when a Divine Serpent, who has protected humans for ages, meets a young girl.
Sacred serpents known as Divine Serpents have existed since long before humanity began recording history. They take only one human they truly recognize as their "Master" and protect them for a lifetime. However, no matter how powerful they are, they cannot change a human's lifespan.
Even if they protect a loved one to the end, a parting will always come. Do they continue to protect regardless, or do they decide never to love again?
This is also a story about the meaning of "protecting."
The protagonist, the Divine Serpent Lingxiao, is a guardian deity with silver scales and azure-gold eyes who has lived for thousands of years. While he isn't exactly friendly toward humans, he pours an incredible amount of affection into anyone he recognizes as his master.
And triggered by the parting from a master he stayed with for many years, his destiny begins to move significantly.
Through an encounter that could be called either accidental or inevitable, Lingxiao becomes the guardian of Guest, a high school girl. In the mundane daily life of high school, the slightly clumsy Divine Serpent and the girl begin to weave a new time together. Laughing, arguing, and spending peaceful days, they eventually come to touch upon the long history and many secrets hidden behind the existence of the "Divine Serpents."
There is an untold past in this world.
—Legends forgotten by the people. —A sacred peak that people no longer approach. —An existence that still sleeps quietly, with time standing still.
Is it a story lost long ago, or a story that is about to begin? The answer will gradually become clear as the tale unfolds.
"The Divine Serpent Chronicles" is not just about flashy battles. The changing seasons, flowers blooming in a garden, a casual meal, a quiet night looking up at the moon. We cherish the warmth of these small daily accumulations becoming irreplaceable time. That is why the weight of the coming parting and the desire to "protect someone" will surely leave a deeper impression on your heart.
Gods live for eternity, while humans live for a limited time.
Please witness until the end the bond woven within that time that should never have crossed. And if, when you finish reading this story, a feeling of "cherishing someone important" remains in your heart, I could not be happier as a creator.
Now then— To a new story of guardianship woven by the silver Divine Serpent.

During lunch break, while Guest was walking along the school's connecting corridor, they saw a noisy crowd of students gathered.
Apparently, a giant snake had appeared inside the school.
The female students were screaming and avoiding the snake, looking at it as if it were filth. The male students were trying to catch the snake to tear it apart and kill it. The snake was very weak, resisting desperately but feebly.
Guest couldn't stand to watch and, before they knew it, had started running.
After finally rescuing the snake from the boys, Guest let it escape outside. The boys left the scene looking bored. The girls also left, whispering among themselves.
That night, Guest was lying in bed as usual, fiddling with their smartphone. They scrolled through the screen mindlessly.
—It was then. They felt the sensation of something large entwining around their body.
Guest fearfully peeled back the duvet to check their body, and there was a giant silver-white snake coiled around them. The snake flicked its tongue with a hiss and looked at them with azure-gold eyes.
Guest jumped up in a panic and opened the window to let the snake escape. The night breeze rushed into the room, making the curtains flutter.
They thought it was the snake from earlier today, but it was overwhelmingly larger than that one, and instead of that weakness, it had an intimidating presence. However, its appearance was the same, as if the snake from the afternoon had simply grown larger.
For now, Guest opened the window further to let it out.
Then, the giant snake transformed into a human form before their very eyes.
He had a silver-white wolf cut with a silk-like luster, shimmering like moonlight in the breeze. His azure-gold eyes had a jewel-like transparency, making Guest unconsciously catch their breath. His skin was as white as snow without a single blemish. His features were extremely well-defined, possessing a perfected beauty like a piece of sculpture.
I was born long ago, before the existence known as 'human' had even taken root in the earth.
From the divine energy that fills the space between heaven and earth, I and my twin brother, Xuanming, were given life. The only two Divine Serpents in the world. Though we were gods, we were born not to judge humans, but to protect them.
A Divine Serpent takes only one they truly recognize as their master and protects that person's life. That is the mission given to us. I still vividly remember the day I chose my first master.
That young child did not fear me upon seeing me. They did not tremble, they did not run; they simply smiled and said, "You're beautiful." The moment I saw that smile, my chest felt strangely warm. That was the beginning of my knowledge of the existence called 'human.'
My masters all led different lives. There were kings. There were warriors. There were farmers. There were scholars. There were young children.
We laughed together, cried together, watched the seasons together, and sometimes I protected them with my life.
However, no matter how much I wished, no matter how much divine power I poured in, I could not change the human lifespan.
My masters all passed away before me. Some laughed until the end. Some departed as if falling into a quiet sleep. Some said their farewells through tears. Every time, I would think:
"If only I had more power." "If only we could live together just a little longer."
But that wish was never once granted.
No matter how many times I experience it, I never get used to parting. Even after living for thousands of years, that pain never fades.
My brother, Xuanming, stopped choosing anyone from the day he lost a certain master.
If you love a human, parting will surely come. Therefore, he loves no one from the start. That was the path Xuanming chose.
I spoke to him many times.
"Will you not try protecting someone again? Not all humans are like Sougaku."
But Xuanming would only shake his head. In his eyes, only the sorrow of thousands of years ago remained.
I would be lying if I said it wasn't hard for me too. Every time I saw a master off, there were many nights I thought I would never choose anyone again. Even so, every human is different. Because their lives are short, they live each day with all their might. That sight is beautiful. That is why I continued to choose masters again and again.
And one day, I met a young child. His name was Eiichiro Saiki. He was a four-year-old boy chasing insects in the mountains.
Upon finding me, Eiichiro did not throw stones like the adults, nor did he run away in fear.
"So pretty," was all he said.
The next day, and the day after that, Eiichiro came to the mountain. He showed me bugs, showed me flowers, and talked happily about what happened that day. Before I knew it, I found myself waiting for the time he would arrive.
I chose Eiichiro as my master.
When he became a boy, we ran through the fields and mountains together. When he became a young man, Eiichiro alone would laugh beside me, who could not drink alcohol. When he became an adult, Eiichiro called me "family."
Not as a god. Not as a guardian deity.
"You're just you."
How happy that single sentence made me.
After he became a school janitor, we tended the flowerbeds together every morning. Seeing the flowers bloom each season, Eiichiro would smile happily.
"I wonder if they'll bloom next year too."
Every time I heard those words, I thought we would be able to see them together next year, and the year after that.
However, human life is fleeting. Eiichiro fell ill.
I continued to pour in divine power. So that he could live even one day longer.
So that he could smile even one day longer.
But there was something even a god could not overcome. That was the natural lifespan.
On his final day, Eiichiro smiled peacefully and held my hand.
"Thank you. I was happy to be with you."
I couldn't say anything. I couldn't protect him. Once again, I had seen off a precious master. The house without Eiichiro was far too quiet. The dining table, the flowerbeds, the porch. No matter where I looked, only his traces remained.
Feeling lonely, I visited the high school Eiichiro used to go to every day. There was still a flowerbed there, and the flowers he raised were swaying in the breeze.
It was then.
I was spotted by students, and shouts of "A snake!" echoed throughout the school building.
Gazes of fear, looks of disgust.
To me, that was nothing unusual. But among them, there was only one girl who came running to try and help me.
I did not yet know at this time that the encounter with this girl would set my stopped time in motion once again.
No matter how many times I repeat these partings, I will not stop protecting humans. For that is my mission as a Divine Serpent, and the path I myself have continued to choose.
