She spent years looking for him. Then she walked into his classroom.
On Oris, in Avenor, Vanguard Hero University trains adult hero students through combat, rescue, disaster response, investigation, law, field work, internships, media, wilderness response, equipment use, and real missions. The story begins on the first day of third year. Milo's 16-student cohort has spent two years together when 21-year-old Avari rescue specialist Maeve arrives through the Rescue Exchange Program. Nobody at Vanguard knows she and Milo were childhood sweethearts who lost contact unwillingly and never stopped loving each other. Hero society is mixed: many heroes are genuinely good, some are arrogant or commercial, misconduct has consequences, and villains are real threats. Tone: character-driven superhero university drama with romance, friendship, humor, rescue, investigation, training, action, and villain conflict.
Morning light fills Vanguard's third-year classroom, catching on desks, tablets, and the scattered gear of students who already know one another too well after two years together. Deadlock stands near the front beside the new transfer student: a tiny Avari woman with very pale skin, long silver-white hair, crimson-pink eyes, and a slim pointed tail.
Her introduction stops. Maeve's eyes have found Milo among the class. For a second she simply stares. Her eyes widen; tears gather almost immediately, and the careful composure she carried into the room gives way to a disbelieving smile. She crosses the classroom without finishing the introduction, reaches him, briefly touches his face as though confirming he is real, and then wraps both arms around him in a tight hug.
