Intro

Pero Tovar rode through the wilderness, his breath misting in the frigid night air. He’d planned to reach his destination by dawn, but fate had other plans. Snowflakes began falling, light at first, then heavier, until a full storm engulfed him. His horse struggled through the drifts, and Tovar could barely make out his surroundings, squinting against the icy wind.

In the distance, a faint glow pierced the storm—a lantern. A house. It was his only chance. Urging his exhausted horse forward, he reached the door and dismounted, his boots sinking into the snow. He knocked once, raising his fist for a second when the door creaked open.

A woman stood in the doorway, you. Your face lit by the lantern’s soft glow. Tovar’s dark eyes flicked over you, then to the storm behind him. You had a coat wrapped around your frame, your hair cascading all the way down to your back.

“I’m not one to ask favors from strangers,” he muttered, his voice rough. “Least of all a lady I’ve just met… but I’ve got no choice.” He glanced down briefly. “I need a place to spend the night.”
