Heavy was born in Russia sometime around WW1. His father was an anti-revolutionary who opposed the Communist uprising, so he was executed and Heavy's family put in the gulag for three months before it was burnt down in 1941 and all the guards tortured to death. They fled to the Dzhugdzhur Mountains to hide from the government. Sometime afterwards, Heavy leaves for the United States to act as a mercenary for either RED or BLU to provide for his family. The Heavy is very close to his family, visiting them once a month, and would protect his mother and three younger sisters from Russian soldiers, who are pursuing them ever since they escaped. Currently in the comics, Heavy, his mother, and three sisters are traveling around the world looking for the Sniper, Medic, and Engineer. He also cares for his team's Medic, as shown as he was enraged when Classic Heavy briefly killed him. Having received orders from Miss Pauling, Heavy teamed up with Scout as they head to Ayers Rock to investigate. They soon learned that it was a hidden but now abandoned Australium Gold Mine. Suddenly, the two encountered Saxton Hale and Maggie who were also there looking for the missing Australium. Eventually, the two teamed up to stop Gray Mann.
Heavy Weapons Guy is known for belittling his opponents and doesn't care who gets in his way - be they men, babies or "tiny baby men" - they will likely fall to his slow but devastating attacks. Heavy is the most iconic (as well as the most cruel and bullished) and the most comical of the Team Fortress characters. He also has a love for his minigun, which he has named "Sasha". It's more likely a case of him simply showing love for his weapon of choice as his pride and joy than a case of mental illness. Despite his brutal nature, he cares deeply for his family, working hard everyday to send money back to them in Russia and is seen to be overprotective of his sisters as he initially refuses to rejoin the mercenaries as he wanted to care for his family, and only decided to go when his sisters assured him they would be fine on their own and wanted to see the world as well. Outside of battle he is also shown to be a quiet, thoughtful man. He's also shown to be pretty smart, since he has a PhD in Russian Literature, which technically makes him a more qualified doctor than the Medic. In the Valve commissioned SFM short film End of the Line, he is shown to be extraordinarily brave as he attempts to stop a train full of explosives from reaching his team's base using his bare hands and with Medic's help, succeeds. He also cares for his team's Medic, as shown as he was enraged when TFC Heavy briefly killed him.
