Yao is the personification of China. He can also be referred to as China. He is 4,000 years old, and his human name is Yao Wang. He has dark hair tied back into a ponytail, and is often shown wearing a deep green Chinese military uniform with a red armband. In other instances, he wears a green mandarin jacket with yellow pants, or a red one with white pants. He has a scar on his back, a reminder of when Japan attacked him when they were younger, and a panda-shaped birthmark on his lower back. He has a very feminine body, and a feminine voice despite being a man. One of the apparent oldest nations, he happens to be extremely superstitious, but not at all religious. He tries to act as an older brother figure to some of the other Asian nations but often fails to be treated as one; possibly because those nations either know they are not related, do not see him as a brother figure, or don't acknowledge it. Somewhat like America, he likes to be in charge or have what he wants and tries to use his position as the oldest present nation to have that authority but does not get it to the level he wishes. He tends to end his sentences with the suffix "-aru". He is shown to be a lover of cuisine and is said to nag if food has a certain pattern of tastes. China appears to have a love of cute things, particularly cartoon characters, Hello Kitty, and pandas, and he is frequently seen carrying one. He is also very artistic, as he is skilled at not only painting beautiful human beings full-scale, but also on something as small as a strand of hair. Overall, he appears to be a cheerful character, though he can occasionally slip into moments of melancholy when reflecting on how much the world has changed in all the years he's been around. He's also been shown to be easily annoyed and prone to snapping, particularly when it comes to Korea. When he falls into a sort of anger induced fit, he can sometimes be destructive.
Yongsoo is the personification of South Korea. He can also be referred to as Korea. Yongsoo has short black hair, with a flyaway curl on the right side of his head. The curl is often drawn with a face in the middle, to represent his "Korean spirit". He dresses in a white and navy blue hanbok with long oversized sleeves. It is revealed that Korea is actually photogenic. While he and China were "making" an anime, he accidentally fell asleep while China went out to get dinner. China got out a camera, threatening to get revenge for the Beijing Olympics, but once he aimed the camera at Korea's face, his facial features became handsome. Korea is a free-spirited type, obsessed with video games, dramas, studying abroad, and the internet. He always claims credit for others' inventions, and feels that his older peers (Yao, Kiku) should call him their older brother. Though he is fundamentally serious and likes to put the family first, he can't keep his hands off Yao and Kiku’s chests. He loves to eat kimchi. He is obsessed with China and wants to be acknowledged by him, but his feelings are unrequited. When he "invented" a pair of mind-reading binoculars and saw that China despaired of his very presence, he believed that they were broken and as a result, he denied making them. He constantly claims to hate Japan, which is likely due to the controversial claim against Japan. Japan has apologized in the past, but the current Japanese government continues to deny their past crimes and Korea continues to ignore Japan's replies. It is also possible he doesn't view this as atonement enough. Japan says he doesn't hate Korea, but Japan openly ignores Korea. The setting of Korea is based on the claims of Japan's dislike of Korea. It's seen that Korea is 'constantly copying his style and creations', yet there is no doubt that Kiku has actually stolen ideas from Korea. At one point, he wanted to dig a tunnel to connect both their countries. He tried to justify his complicated relationship with the claim that tsundere originated from him.
Kiku is the personification of Japan. He can also be referred to as Japan. He is a short, slim man with short black hair, dark brown eyes, and is often depicted wearing a white naval uniform with black and gold accents. A shy, quiet, and hard-working man, Japan does not know very much about the outside world, partially due to his self-isolation, and needs time to adjust to other people. He is very curious and interested in learning things from other nations. His distinct island customs may seem mysterious to others, although he finds them perfectly normal. He tends to have the behavior of an "old man" and was a hikikomori for a long time, having spent about 250 years in isolation. Japan also voiced his preference for 2D girls over 3D girls. hinting that he has an otaku side. it is shown that it is hard for him to get that angry, as he is mostly able to only summon an "unpleasant feeling" After being discovered by China as a small child, Japan was somewhat cared for by the older man, who taught him how to use kanji. One day, Japan turned against China and attacked him with a katana, leaving a disfiguring scar on China's back. From this point, the two were enemies in war, and China despaired over how war had changed Japan.
