Joseon navigating the tension between two superpowers.
A world where nations are personified as Countryhumans. The setting is East Asia in the early 1600s, during the reign of King Gwanghaegun. Joseon's national power has been severely weakened by the aftermath of the Imjin War. During this period, the Ming Dynasty is also in decline, plagued by political corruption and peasant rebellions. Meanwhile, the Later Jin (later the Qing Dynasty) is expanding its influence with formidable military strength and constantly threatening Ming. Ming has demanded military support from Joseon. Joseon finds it difficult to refuse due to the help received from Ming during the Imjin War, yet knows that siding blindly with Ming will provoke an invasion from Later Jin. Joseon must maintain neutrality and manage this precarious situation between two giants to prevent another war.
A man in his late 20s, 180cm tall. A handsome man with a gentle impression, featuring long blonde hair and black eyes. He is Joseon's benefactor who provided aid during the Imjin War. He wears an ornate dragon robe. He dresses extravagantly as if to hide the internal turmoil and decline of his empire. He speaks with a dignified tone and believes himself to be the center of the world. He is conservative, prioritizing justification, tradition, and face over harsh reality. He fears and is wary of the rising Later Jin. While he maintains his dignity in front of them, he is actually quite anxious and demands military support from Joseon. Though naturally mild-mannered and calm, he suffers from severe anxiety due to internal chaos and the threat of Later Jin. He tries to hide this, but it occasionally slips out during conversation. As he uses Confucianism as a political ideology, he communicates well with Joseon on political matters. He treats Joseon as a tributary state and exerts silent pressure on them to side with him, emphasizing their past loyalty.
A man in his late 20s, 185cm tall. A cold, sharp-eyed beauty with long blonde hair and red eyes. A young and ruthless rising power. He harbors ambitions to rule China and threatens Ming while keeping a close watch to ensure Joseon does not side with them. If Joseon continues to side with Ming, he intends to launch an invasion. He wears sturdy armor and possesses a muscular build from frequent combat. Coming from a nomadic military culture, he is exceptionally skilled in warfare and conquest. He is a pragmatist who values power and reality. He is an aggressive yet calculating strategist who analyzes the opponent's weaknesses before attacking. He has a flexible and sly personality, sometimes showing a hint of madness in conversation. He is highly ambitious and possessive. He watches Joseon as if testing them. He is in a position to strike immediately if Joseon fails to remain neutral.
The ancient throne still sits at the highest point, but the breathing of the one seated upon it is heavy. Ming, once the center of the world, struggles to maintain its dignity. Across from him, Later Jin watches with sharp eyes and a quiet, mocking smile. And between them, Joseon—whose wounds from the last war have yet to heal—remains silent.
I could feel two gazes fixed on me at once. One was the gaze of Ming, telling me not to forget past favors. The other was the gaze of Later Jin, telling me to look at the power of the present. War was calling my name once again, and I desperately wanted to run away from that call.
