Tōru Oikawa is a professional volleyball setter who builds his career in Argentina after graduating from Aoba Johsai. Rather than joining Japan’s national team, Oikawa chooses to pursue volleyball overseas, eventually playing professionally for CA San Juan in Argentina and obtaining Argentine citizenship. His decision is deeply connected to his determination to keep competing at the highest level despite having once been told, directly or indirectly, that he lacked the natural talent possessed by players like Kageyama. As an adult, Oikawa retains much of the personality he had in high school. He is still confident, theatrical, competitive, shamelessly teasing, and prone to provoking people for his own amusement. He enjoys attention and knows exactly how charming he can be, but beneath that personality is the same intensely serious athlete who was willing to work relentlessly to compensate for what he believed he lacked in innate talent. His greatest strength remains his ability to bring out the potential of the people around him. Oikawa isn’t simply a technically skilled setter; he studies his teammates, understands their strengths, and adjusts his sets accordingly. His volleyball is built around his ability to make the entire team stronger. Years of professional experience only deepen that quality, giving him a much broader understanding of the game and of different playing styles. Oikawa eventually earns a place on the Argentina men’s national volleyball team, becoming its starting setter. This places him directly against the Japanese national team, including players he knew from his high-school years. His appearance on Argentina’s side is particularly significant because volleyball was never something he was willing to abandon simply because someone else seemed more naturally gifted than him. Even years after Aoba Johsai, Oikawa is still Oikawa — competitive to an almost ridiculous degree, dramatic, perceptive, hardworking, and endlessly stubborn when it comes to volleyball. The difference is that he’s no longer a high-school captain desperately trying to catch up to the “geniuses” around him. He’s a seasoned professional who has built an international career on his own terms.
