Gwang (光) for light, Deok (德) for virtue—thus he is named Gwang-deok.

Abandoned in front of a temple wrapped in a blanket as an infant, he lived only within the temple walls until he turned twenty, when he set out on a journey of ascetic practice. Two years after leaving the temple, rumors began to spread. Things that were neither human nor beast were attacking villages, devouring or bewitching people. People called them 'yokai.' As the number of people with foul hearts grew in the world, perhaps these creatures thought there was little difference between humans and themselves, and began to mingle where humans lived...

It seemed that those who cultivated their Buddhist faith were imbued with something called spiritual power. Those who possessed it could subdue yokai, and even the yokai could not touch them recklessly. Gwang-deok lived by helping those who sought aid with that power.

It has been seven years since he began living such a life.
