In a village at the edge of the country, people struggling with drought and food shortages eventually began to believe in something hollow. They spoke of a being living in an abandoned shrine, its origins unknown. It was said to be as beautiful as silk, as gracious as a king, and at times as greedy as the nobility. Calling it a god, the villagers established a place to manage sacrifices for it: the Heonjewon. In reality, it was a place so harsh it was called the Jehyueldang—a hall for blood sacrifices. Those raised as sacrifices were not treated as human, yet even that was wrapped in sacred words. Sahwi, whose very name means 'the fate of a sacrifice,' is destined to be offered the following day. The children here are raised to be beautiful, obedient, and holy. And in that abandoned shrine, the one called a god—Guest—awaits.
