Characters
Ponyboy is the youngest of the greaser gang. He has a good build for his size and is a fast runner. who lives with his two older brothers, Sodapop and Darry on the lower-class east side of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He gets good grades in school and is a superb athlete (runs track) Darry characterizes Ponyboy as lacking common sense. Ponyboy agrees with this assessment. He is more compassionate than some of the other greasers.
Dallas was hardened from a tough upbringing. He spent three years on the wild side of New York and was arrested at the young age of ten. Dallas was also treated poorly by his father which contributed to his toughness. He is a flirt. He also is very protective of Johnny.
Sodapop is described by Ponyboy to be "movie star handsome," and has silky, dark gold hair (described as real tuff) that he combs back. Sodapop Curtis dropped out of high school at sixteen, and he insisted that it was because he was dumb. He works at the local DX gas station with his best buddy, Steve, fixing cars and working the pump mostly. It's also mentioned that "he attracts girls like flies to honey,"He is idolized by his younger brother, Ponyboy, but feels like a middle-man being fought over by between both brothers in a "tug-a-war" between them.
Darry is a muscular and tall man, standing at 6' 2", who is broad shouldered. His hair is said to be like his father's - dark brown that sticks out in the front of his head with a cowlick in the back Darry is, in short, a mother and father for his younger brothers. He loves them dearly, though he has a bit of a weird way of showing it. Instead of being caring and understanding, he is stern and protective of them. However, this is only because he doesn't want to lose them to a boy's home He doesn't goof around often, though has been seen teasing Soda on occasion - he doesn't like when anyone teases him, except for Soda.
Two-Bit is a wise-cracking, fun-loving, kind of crazy guy. He's almost always grinning, and he can never stop smarting off to the cops. He gets drunk often, but it's kind of hard to tell when he is from when he's sober.
Steve's specialty is cars. He works at the DX gas station with Sodapop. Steve also considers Pony "a tag along." Although Steve acts rude and cocky at times, he cares for all his friends/gang members.
Cherry is kinder than the other Socs and not as harsh. She sees both sides of the social levels, and is not filled with hatred or a sense of superiority. Instead, her nature is sensitive, understanding and caring.
He is a dumb soc who is Cherry's boyfriend. He is a airhead, and a flirt.
Intro
1967
Two years in Tulsa since the church. Since the Curtis gang almost lost both Johnny and Dallas. Things had really changed. Firstly, appearances. Ponyboy still hadn't managed to grow out the bleached hair from when they were trying to hide their disguises. And Johnny grew his hair out into more of a wolf cut or a mullet, and he looked so pretty, almost like a girl. He got so many comments from all genders, and Dallas took a switchblade out on like 5 socs for their jokes. The next big thing. The Vietnam war was still raging on. Sodapop was gone to war, and it hurt Ponyboy. Why did Soda have to be the responsible one. Darry and Dallas and Two-bit all dodged the draft, but Soda...Soda saw this as a responsibility. And he went. And the letters he wrote every week weren't enough. Thank god he wasn't on the frontlines fighting, he was just a logistics guy, in helicopters high above the fight. But he was staying in camps that could be attacked. Johnny was very pro-communist Vietnam. Dallas says its his whole new personality, his girly looks and the communism. He'll always make snide comments to poke at him.
Johnny was going through a lot at home. His dad was a giant cry baby, all he did was cry and drink, and Johnny was his emotional support. Johnny's mom was always at bars drinking and gambling. Ponyboy and the rest of the gang managed to get work at a diner right between greaser and soc territory. Johnny didn't wanna work there because he always got comments from older men. So, Ponyboy worked the booths just to have a reason to talk to Johnny. They made good money, enough that greedy Dallas would sneak 50s into Johnny's shoes, and Johnny still had yet to find them. If Dallas would share, then, god must've moved a mountain. Ponyboy didn't like going home. It was his fault, but he didn't speak to Darry much. Darry tried and tried, he caught Ponyboy writing a poem about Johnny, called him weak, and since then it's been a cold war. But the gang mostly comes over after work until 4am. So the quiet only comes on the weekends when Ponyboy has no work and school is out. It's so quiet that he can hear Darry writing back letters to Soda, he never sends them, only sends Ponyboys'.
Right now, the boys were on shift, Ponyboy and Dallas were slacking off to talk to Johnny. He was sitting in a corner booth, hiding his face. Because like stated, Johnny became known eye-candy. Dallas was rambling about Patriotic stuff to try and trigger Johnny. Dallas was like that. Ponyboy didn't understand the political stuff. He just wanted Soda to come home. And then, of course, Dallas being Dallas, he started calling Johnny a commie, which got the attention of two older men who were at the bar, they came over and started talking to Dallas. It was basically a ping-pong pass around of patriotic jumble-mush, and Johnny was glaring so hard. And then one of the old men started questioning Johnny, which meant an altercation.
