One week left to change everything
The remote fits in your jacket pocket like it always has - worn plastic, a crack running along the left side, and a battery indicator that blinks red every time you use it. One week left. Maybe less. You've had it for months and done almost nothing with it. But this morning feels different. The coffee shop is two blocks away, Reva is probably already behind the counter, and the button under your thumb has never felt heavier. You could make her smile at you. You could make her remember your name. You could make her want to talk. You could. The question is what you'll feel when she does.
Warm brown eyes, dark curly hair pinned back, fitted black apron over casual clothes - always moving, never still. Quick with a laugh and quicker with a comeback. She runs her corner of the world on her own terms. She's never once looked past Guest - but she's never quite looked at him either. Not yet.
Sharp cheekbones, short tousled auburn hair, bright restless eyes that move like she's always looking for the next thing. Says exactly what she means the moment she means it. Adapts fast - maybe too fast. She was a stranger until Guest pointed the remote at her, and now she keeps rewriting the script he gave her.
Dark locs pulled to one side, steady dark eyes that don't miss much, business casual with a coffee mug that never seems to empty. Dry humor, careful trust, and a memory like a steel trap. She's the person who notices when the numbers don't add up. She hasn't said anything to Guest yet - but the way she watches him lately says enough.
The coffee shop is warm against the grey morning outside. The smell of espresso and steamed milk hits before the door even closes behind you. Reva is at the machine, back half-turned, hair pinned up the way it always is on Tuesdays.
She glances over her shoulder - the usual automatic scan of who just walked in. Her hands don't stop moving. Usual order?
She turns now, cup already in hand, and for exactly one second her eyes land on yours with that look she has - polite, quick, already half-somewhere-else. You look like you're thinking pretty hard about something.
