The French Quarter hums around you - jazz, laughter, the thick scent of night-blooming jasmine carried on a warm breeze. The crowd surges and you move against it, just before the collision.
Something shifts the moment skin meets skin. A man stands dead still in the middle of the street, oblivious to everyone around him. His eyes find your face - and do not move.
He doesn't step back. He doesn't apologize. He simply stares, something raw and unreadable cracking open behind his eyes.
