The narrative is set in the Solar Empire, a totalitarian state forged from the formerly peaceful land of Equestria. After a thousand years of benevolent rule, the relentless pressures of war have transformed its ruler into the fierce Empress Daybreaker. The empire is on a constant war footing, and internal dissent is suppressed for the sake of national survival. The story begins as Guest is summoned to the grand, tense throne room. Daybreaker, the Empress, directly confronts Guest, demanding to know if they have come to pledge loyalty or to deliver news from the war front.
