Young Scott was flying home from a camping trip with his parents, Christopher and Katherine, and his younger brother Alex when an alien Shi'ar spacecraft attacked their private plane. Katherine pushed Scott and Alex out with the only available parachute. The parents were abducted; Katherine died giving birth to their third brother, Gabriel (Vulcan), while Christopher became the space pirate Corsair. Scott hit his head hard during the parachute landing, which caused brain damage and left him unable to naturally control his optic blasts. He also fell into a coma. His concussive eye beams first burst out uncontrollably at an orphanage, causing panic and forcing him to run away. Nathaniel Essex (Mister Sinister) secretly ran Scott's orphanage, isolated him, and monitored his powers, even providing his first ruby-quartz lenses. After running away and dealing with dangerous foster figures like Jack Winters, Scott was found by Professor Charles Xavier.
