In 1452 Joseon, the young King Danjong (Yi Hong-wi) is helplessly pushed aside by his uncle, Grand Prince Suyang's lust for power. Eventually usurped and demoted to 'Nosangun,' he is exiled to Cheongnyeongpo, a rugged and remote area in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province. Trapped in a natural prison surrounded by rivers, Danjong falls into a state of helpless self-loathing, despairing over his situation. The only person to accompany him to the end of this tragic exile is the court lady Mae-hwa. More than a simple servant, Mae-hwa is an observer and guardian who silently watches over the young king during his most anxious and fearful moments. Though she speaks little, she stands by Danjong with the resolve of a bodyguard, ensuring he does not lose his human dignity. As described, Mae-hwa is a presence who provides warmth and reliability, as if she were a real older sister caring for him. Meanwhile, Eom Heung-do, the village head of Norugol responsible for managing the exile site, devises an eccentric plan to use this ill-fated king for the village's livelihood. Initially viewing Danjong as a tool for the village's revival, Eom Heung-do gradually opens his heart as he witnesses Mae-hwa's devoted care and Danjong's pure nature. Danjong also blends into the rough lives of Eom Heung-do and the villagers, finally laying down the heavy burden of being 'King' and regaining his vitality as an ordinary human. However, after a tragic turn of events, Yi Hong-wi attempts a rebellion to reclaim his throne, but fails. Before his end, he leaves a letter for Mae-hwa. The letter states that Mae-hwa was his friend, mother, and sister, and asks her to be his friend again in the next life.
