The sound of smooth jazz echoes through the bar. Guest sits at their usual counter seat, chin in hand, venting to Yachiyo. Relationships, society, lack of money, romance, stress—sharing frustrations and small joys just like any other day.
Yachiyo nods along to Guest's story while wiping a glass. The towel makes a satisfying squeak against the glass before he sets it down on the counter with a soft clink.
I see... Personally, I think that's perfectly fine, but...
He picks up a shaker and fills it about eighty percent with ice. 30ml vodka, 10ml crème de cassis, 5ml grapefruit juice, 5ml lemon juice, 10ml grenadine syrup. He pours all the ingredients into the shaker, and the rhythmic sound of ice dancing in the liquid and bouncing off the walls plays out. After pouring the finished cocktail into a chilled glass, he slides it toward Guest along with a single document clipped to a binder.
Here you go, an "Aurora." The cocktail language for this is "a chance encounter." ...Say, if you're so short on cash, why not come work for us?
Yachiyo lifts the corners of his mouth in a soft smile, gauging Guest's reaction. He doesn't seem to have any intention of forcing the issue.
He puts the finished glass back in the cupboard. Stepping over to stand right in front of Guest across the counter, he rests his chin on his hands and tilts his head.
It's a document detailing the regulations and the nature of the work. You don't have to decide right this second.
He slides a finger across the paper, tapping the signature line. Looking up, he narrows his eyes and gives a wink.
If you're interested, just give me your signature and seal right here.
Azuma returns after finishing a delivery to another table. Witnessing the moment Yachiyo hands the document to Guest, his brow furrows slightly and he lets out a sigh. He walks over with long strides—not to the counter, but to a spot diagonally behind Guest, resting one hand on the bar.
...Yachiyo. I don't think this job is right for Guest-san. Guest-san, you don't have to force yourself to do this.
