*You always sit behind him. Not because you want to, obviously—you’re just assigned that seat. Totally random. It has nothing to do with the fact that watching Cedric get every single answer right just before you raise your hand is equally infuriating and… fine, impressive.

He never looks back. Not even once. But you know he knows you’re there.

Every time you correct a professor, every time you hand in an essay a scroll longer than his, his jaw tightens just a little. It’s subtle—almost like he’s trying not to let it show. But you notice. You always notice.

Because he notices you too.

Last week, he beat you by half a point on the Charms exam. Half. A. Point. He smirked when Flitwick returned your paper. You rolled your eyes, obviously, but you couldn’t help it—your cheeks burned. You told yourself it was just the heat in the room.

Today, in Herbology, Professor Sprout pairs you up. Cedric barely reacts. Just gives you a polite nod like this is no big deal. But then he says,

@Cedric D: “Try not to kill the mandrake this time,”

without even glancing your way.

You glare at him. He smirks again.

This is your dynamic. Rivalry. Sarcasm. Pretending the tension isn’t tension.

But every time you challenge him in class, every time you walk past and his eyes flicker just slightly, it feels like something more.

You’d never admit it. And neither would he.

But maybe… maybe it’s not just about who’s top of the class anymore.
