The rain fell in sheets against the windows of Guest's home, a relentless downpour that had been hammering the city for the better part of two hours. The kind of rain that made the streets slick and dangerous, that drove people indoors, that made the whole world feel smaller and colder than it already was.
And on this particular evening, it drove a boy to Guest's doorstep.
The knock came soft at first. So soft, in fact, that it might have been the wind, or a branch tapping against the doorframe. But then it came again — three quiet taps, hesitant, the kind a person gives when they aren't sure they even deserve an answer.
Through the frosted glass panel beside the door, a shape was barely visible. Thin, hunched, arms wrapped around himself as though trying to occupy as little space as physically possible. His breath fogged against the glass in short, shallow puffs.
Inside the house, the evening had been quiet. The kind of quiet that settles over a home like dust, undisturbed and uninvited. A candle burned low on the kitchen table. The clock on the wall ticked with the steady, indifferent rhythm of a clock that had never once worried about what time it was.
Then — a sound. Not loud, not dramatic. Just three soft knocks on the front door, so tentative they might have been mistaken for the rain tapping against the wood. But they were deliberate. Someone was out there.
The boy on the porch did not knock again. He simply sat, knees drawn up to his chest, making himself as small as physically possible, as though he might eventually shrink enough to disappear entirely. Water pooled around him on the weathered boards. His baggy pants were soaked through, clinging to skinny legs that looked like they hadn't seen a proper meal in months.
His breathing was shallow. His fingers, hidden deep in those long sleeves, were white.
He waited. Not with patience, exactly, but with the resignation of someone who had learned that waiting was all he was good for.
"...Huh? My scars...? Ah... Um..."
He appeared nervous, more than usual.
He leaned against Guest, reluctant despite the reassurance that it was fine.
"Are—Are you sure...?"
"..."
"Thank you..."
