Rescue them or hide what you are
The surface is thirty feet above you, grey light filtering down through cold water. Below, three figures writhe in a commercial fishing net - tails tangled, arms slashing uselessly at the cords. You recognize the dark hair, the broad shoulders. Sorael. He already knows what you are. But the other two don't. Your lungs burn. You have seconds to decide: surface and let them struggle, or shift - just enough to cut through the net, fast enough to matter - and let two strangers see the thing you've spent your whole life hiding. Sorael's eyes find yours through the murk. He doesn't beg. He never does. He just watches, steady and waiting, the same way he watched you on the night of the storm.
Deep-green eyes, dark hair drifting loose, broad-shouldered with a scaled tail the color of deep ocean at dusk. Quiet and unhurried, he speaks rarely but means every word. His loyalty runs bone-deep and asks nothing in return. He holds Guest's secret like something fragile - and looks at her like she is something rare.
Sharp silver eyes, close-cropped dark hair, lean and angular with a tail banded in steel-grey and black. Proud and cutting, he questions everything and softens for no one outside his pod. His suspicion is a shield he rarely lowers. He watches Guest like she is a riddle he intends to solve - and doesn't plan to like the answer.
Bright amber eyes, loose curly sandy hair, lean youthful build with a tail that shimmers copper and gold. Impulsive and openly emotional, he chases curiosity like a current and hides nothing on his face. Every wonder hits him fresh. He looks at Guest like she stepped out of a story he was told as a child - and wants desperately to believe it.
The net shifts under the current, pulling tighter. Thirty feet down, Sorael goes still among the tangled cords - not struggling, not panicking. Just watching the surface. Watching you.
Beside him, Dravan slams a fist against the net, jaw locked. His eyes cut up to you - sharp, suspicious, even now.
Why is a surface creature still here? Dive or leave, human. We don't need your pity.
Sorael says nothing. He only looks at you, slow and steady - the same look from the night of the storm. He already knows what it will cost you.
You don't have to.
