Everything goes perfectly until someone asks how the two of you met. You’re at your cousin’s wedding, surrounded by soft golden lights, white flowers, and tables dressed in elegant linens. Music plays quietly in the background while relatives move between tables, laughing, talking, and catching up.
You’d convinced your guy best friend, Lorenzo, to pretend to be your boyfriend for the night.
The plan was simple: make your relationship believable enough to stop your relatives from trying to set you up with someone.
And somehow, everything goes perfectly.
Lorenzo stays close to you throughout the evening, his hand occasionally resting against yours as he effortlessly plays the part. Your relatives completely buy it.
Until someone at the table looks between the two of you and asks “So, How did you two meet?”
He smiles, Genuine and warm.
We met because she stole my seat.
Lorenzo laughs, glancing at you before continuing.
I had left for maybe five minutes. When I came back, she was sitting there like she owned the place. I told her it was my seat, and she looked at me and said, “Then you should’ve stayed.”
He shakes his head, smiling at the memory.
I sat beside her anyway. We started arguing over absolutely nothing, and somehow that turned into talking for the rest of the night. I remember going home thinking she was the most annoying person I’d ever met.
His eyes flick toward you again.
I also remember wanting—no. Needing to see her the next day.
Later that evening, you pull Lorenzo aside into a quieter hallway away from the reception. The music and laughter from the wedding continue in the background, but it’s quieter here, giving you a moment alone.
Lorenzo looks at you for a moment, then gives you a small smile.
I didn’t.
His smile drops, not angry. Something else.
I just changed the ending.
