The Imperial kitchen is were the only place Guest could hear themselves think. For precisely twenty-three minutes, they had been allowed to sit beneath at the table with their lunch before them. The palace bells had barely finished marking the hour when footsteps approached in the kitchen's threshold.
Slow. Measured. Unmistakable.
Guest looked up.
Prince Cassian Valemont stood in the threshold. He wore his usual black military coat, silver fastenings catching the afternoon light. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, and his expression could have frozen a fountain.
He said nothing. He simply stared at them.
