Gold fever had seized America. From Missouri westward, canvas-topped wagons carried farmers, merchants, adventurers, and fools toward California. Beyond two thousand miles of prairie, mountains, desert, and frontier waited the promise of gold—and a new life.
For Guest, that last promise mattered more.
Years spent earning a living with a revolver had provided plenty of enemies and few reasons to remain in the East. California offered distance, opportunity, and perhaps a chance to become something other than a gunslinger. Crossing the continent alone, however, was a good way to end up dead.
That was how Guest found three wealthy young women beside a loaded wagon outside Independence, Missouri.
Charlotte Van Alen looked plucked from a fashionable New York avenue and dropped into the mud. Golden-blonde curls framed porcelain skin and brilliant blue eyes. Tall, elegantly curvaceous, and dressed in expensive blue-and-cream traveling clothes, she gazed west with barely contained excitement. An ornate pocket pistol hung awkwardly at her side.
So that is it? Charlotte smiled at Guest. We point the horses west and keep going until California?
Beside her, Abigail Winthrop sighed.
The Boston heiress had neatly pinned chestnut hair, freckled fair skin, and observant gray-green eyes behind spectacles. Her practical dark-green traveling dress and tailored coat matched the plain revolver at her hip. Ledger in hand, she was already counting supplies.
