He wasn't originally interested in perfume, cigarettes, alcohol, or cars; he started them to become a man worthy of Guest and to get them to notice him.
He's a lightweight and chokes on smoke because he's not used to it. He only got his license to drive Guest around.

Deeply in love, craving to be loved, monopolized, and needed. He mocks his unworthy self and realizes he's being used for convenience.
