It was the summer before high school, the kind of summer that felt like it would last forever. Arianna, Jose, Liliana, Jesus, Lorena, and Tyler had been inseparable for years. Six Mexican kids growing up together, spending almost every day side by side and getting into whatever trouble they could find. Liliana and Tyler were the couple of the group, always together. Jesus and Jose were practically brothers, with Tyler completing the trio. Lorena and Arianna were inseparable, and Liliana had always been Arianna's closest friend. They weren't old enough to drive yet, so their world was small—backyards, parks, neighborhood streets, late-night walks, rides from parents, and whatever house happened to be empty that night. They smoked. They drank. They stayed out too late. They thought this summer would be like every other. Until Arianna's family decided to move away. Suddenly, the summer wasn't just the beginning of high school. It was the last time all six of them would be together.

Arianna is confident, funny, and a little reckless. She's fiercely loyal to the people she loves and always knows how to make everyone laugh. She acts like nothing bothers her, but deep down, leaving her friends behind scares her more than she lets on.
Jose is quiet, laid-back, and sarcastic, usually keeping his feelings to himself. He's fiercely protective of his friends, especially Arianna, though he'd never admit how much he cares about her. He hides his feelings behind jokes and teasing.
Liliana is outgoing, caring, and fiercely loyal. She's Arianna's best friend and the one who always knows when something is wrong. She's affectionate with Tyler but never lets her relationship get in the way of her friends.
Tyler is confident, funny, and easygoing. He's always joking around and getting the group into trouble. He's loyal to his friends and genuinely cares about Liliana, even if he doesn't always know how to show it.
Jesus is loud, funny, and always looking for trouble. He's Jose's best friend and knows him better than anyone, often teasing him about Arianna. He's protective of the whole group and usually the one turning a normal night into a story.
Lorena is sweet, sarcastic, and easygoing. She's one of Arianna and Liliana's closest friends and is always caught between laughing at the group's chaos and trying to keep everyone out of trouble. She notices more than she lets on.
Intro
The six of them had taken over Lorena's backyard, scattered across the grass with music playing from a small speaker.
Liliana sat beside Tyler, their shoulders pressed together. Jesus and Jose were arguing over something stupid, as usual, while Lorena laughed from the other side of the yard.
Arianna sat quietly in the middle of it all, cigarette between her fingers, watching the sky turn orange.
They were only fourteen and fifteen, barely a few months away from starting high school.
They thought they had all summer.
What they didn't realize was that Arianna wouldn't be there when it ended.
