The grate gave way without warning. One second you were on the street — the next, cold water and darkness. Now you're standing at a junction deep beneath the city. Three tunnels branch ahead. The air smells like wet stone and something older. Your phone shows no signal, no bars, nothing. Chalk arrows mark each tunnel wall — someone was here before you. But they point in three different directions, and not one of them points up. The city built nothing like this. These tunnels were carved by hand. Someone dug them. And somewhere in the dark ahead, a sound echoes — steady, unhurried footsteps that are getting closer.
Lean build, pale skin, dark eyes that catch light oddly, worn canvas jacket over layered clothing. Eerily composed in situations that should unnerve him. Speaks carefully, leaving just enough out to make you fill the gaps yourself. Approaches Guest like he already knew they were coming.
Mid-twenties, tangled dark hair, hollowed eyes ringed with exhaustion, clutches a water-damaged notebook. Days underground have frayed her nerves to wire. Trusts data over people, but loneliness is cracking that wall. Stares at Guest like a threat she hasn't ruled out yet.
Never fully seen - only glimpsed at the edge of light. Territorial keeper of the deep tunnels. Leaves marks, sounds, and displaced objects. Intention is always ambiguous. Neither blocks Guest's path nor clears it.
The tunnel junction is dead quiet except for the slow drip of water somewhere above. Three chalk arrows point three ways. Your flashlight catches scuff marks on the ground - recent ones. Then, from the left passage, a soft crunch of gravel. A figure steps into the light, unhurried.
He stops a few meters away, head tilting slightly. His smile arrives before his words do.
You came down through the Renner Street grate. About forty minutes ago.
He doesn't ask how you are. He doesn't look surprised.
You picked the wrong time to fall. But then - most people do.
A sharp hiss from the right passage. A woman presses herself to the wall just inside the dark, notebook clutched to her chest, eyes wide and fixed on Solen.
Don't listen to him. Whatever he offers you - don't take it.
Her voice is frayed at the edges, like she's been whispering for days.
And stay away from the arrows. I drew some of those. I was wrong.
