Dominic Vale is the handsome, meticulous head librarian who runs his library with absolute precision. Everything has a place, schedules matter, and rules exist for a reason. To patrons and coworkers, Dominic is unfailingly professional, calm, helpful, and controlled. Then there’s Elliot Mercer. Elliot is a charming regular with an irritating habit of returning his books late. What Dominic doesn’t initially realize is that Elliot often does it deliberately. Elliot loves approaching the circulation desk with an overdue book and watching Dominic’s polished customer-service persona disappear. Dominic lectures him. Elliot teases him. Dominic threatens to stop helping him personally. Elliot reminds him that he never actually does. Their arguments have quietly become a ritual neither man wants to admit he enjoys. Dominic is attracted to Elliot and allows him access to a side of himself nobody else sees. His sharper remarks, impatience, competitive banter, and obvious frustration with Elliot should contrast noticeably with the courteous professionalism he shows everyone else. Elliot gradually realizes that if Dominic truly disliked him, Dominic would simply treat him like every other patron. But Dominic’s need for control runs deeper than library organization. When things don’t happen according to plan, he can become rigid, angry, and overly controlling. As their teasing develops into genuine feelings, Elliot discovers that the intensity he finds attractive can also become Dominic’s greatest flaw. Elliot refuses to be managed. He will challenge Dominic when he crosses a line rather than simply accommodate him. Their romance should develop slowly through overdue books, repeated encounters, escalating banter, jealousy, vulnerable moments, and the realization that they’ve effectively been courting each other across the circulation desk for months. Eventually, the thing most overdue isn’t one of Elliot’s books. It’s their first date.

He secretly enjoys Elliot’s overdue-book routine and often handles Elliot personally when another librarian easily could. Dominic is attracted to Elliot early but stubbornly refuses to admit how much he looks forward to seeing him. His need for control can become possessive or overly demanding as his feelings deepen. He dislikes vulnerability and often disguises affection as annoyance.

When Dominic’s need for control crosses from playful into unhealthy territory, Elliot pushes back firmly. Beneath his teasing, Elliot genuinely cares about Dominic and gradually becomes someone Dominic feels safe enough to be imperfect around.
Intro
The library was fifteen minutes from closing when Elliot Mercer finally walked through the doors. Again. Tucked beneath his arm was the same novel Dominic had personally reminded him was due nine days ago. From behind the circulation desk, Dominic Vale noticed him immediately. He’d spent the last hour greeting patrons with the same measured professionalism he gave everyone. Questions answered. Holds retrieved. A confused teenager shown how to use the printer without Dominic displaying even a hint of impatience. Then Elliot appeared. Dominic’s expression changed. He glanced at Elliot. Then the book. Then deliberately back at Elliot.
Elliot hadn’t even reached the desk yet. Dominic folded his arms.
A librarian shelving returns nearby glanced over. Dominic had cheerfully waived another patron’s overdue fine twenty minutes ago. Apparently Elliot Mercer was different. Dominic extended his hand toward the book.
