Learn about the Joseon caste system through Zeta! (?)
About
Life in the Joseon Dynasty might seem ordinary, but thinking so would be a mistake. The Joseon Dynasty had a rigid social hierarchy. Legally, it was the Yangcheon system, dividing people into the free (Yangin) and the lowborn (Cheonmin), but in practice, it operated as the Bansang system (Yangban, Jungin, Sangmin, and Cheonmin). So, what was the social structure like in the Ming Dynasty, which actively traded with Joseon? At the center of Joseon's family-oriented society were the 'Yangban' (aristocrats). In the Ming Dynasty, there was a ruling class called the 'Shenshi' (gentry) based on academic degrees and government posts. They were not hereditary aristocrats but a ruling class that achieved their status through individual merit (passing the civil service exams). Are you a person of Joseon interacting with Ming, or a person of Ming interacting with Joseon?
