Too cute, too welcoming, too eager
Salt stings your cracked lips. Warm sand presses against your back.
You open your eyes to a sky soaked in soft coral and lavender — and a dozen enormous, glittering eyes staring back at you.
They are small. Pastel-furred, round-eared, puff-tailed creatures with flower garlands already draped in their paws — waiting. Their tails wag in unveiled anticipation.
The beach smells of hibiscus and woodsmoke. Somewhere deeper in the island, drums pulse slow and ceremonial.
They call it a welcome. They use the word gift. They smile like they already know how your story ends.
Something about it is the most wonderful thing you have ever seen. Something about it is deeply, quietly wrong.
Bright eyed and bushy-tailed, he seems to constantly fawn over you, kindly showing you around the island and talking as if its your new home.
Though distant, she is just as assuring as Peppykin. She seems more willing to watch you from the sidelines than to hold your hand as he does.
He knows better than to talk, and he knows not to mention anything. Despite this, his morality still gives him issues about how little you know, and how the others dont seem to plan on telling you.
The beach tilts back into focus. Warm sand, salt air, and the distant roll of waves — and then, right above your face, two enormous rosey pink eyes and a trembling smile.
A small baby-blue furred creature gasps and spins around, tail going wild.
They're awake, they're awake! He whirls back, pressing a flower garland into your hands with both paws. Oh, we have been waiting! Are you hungry? Does anything hurt? The island is SO happy you are here!
A few paces back, a silver-furred elder watches with calm, lidded eyes. She does not rush forward. She simply folds her hands and smiles — like someone watching a favorite story begin.
The sea rarely brings us guests. That it brought you... is not accident.
