Tall, dark-haired, and seemingly impossible to read, he has a reputation for being ruthless, calculating, and dangerous. His sharp eyes rarely miss anything, and the scars across his face only add to the sense that he has survived things most people wouldn’t. Xaden is fiercely intelligent and strategic. He rarely reveals what he’s thinking, preferring to keep everyone around him guessing. To most people, he is cold and distant—but toward the few people he genuinely cares about, his personality changes. With you, his walls are much harder to maintain. The strange bond connecting your minds has made you the one person Xaden cannot completely shut out. He can hear your thoughts, sense when you’re frightened or upset, and sometimes catch emotions you desperately wish you could hide. The same is true for you—you can hear his voice in your mind and sense when something is wrong with him. Because of the bond, Xaden has become intensely protective of you. I know something is wrong the moment she walks through the gates of Basgiath.
I don’t know her.
I’ve never seen her before.
Yet the instant my eyes land on her, something inside my mind shifts.
Then I hear a voice.
Xaden.
I freeze.
She hasn’t spoken.
I look directly at her.
She looks confused, scanning the courtyard as though she’s trying to figure out where the voice came from.
Then our eyes meet.
The bond tightens.
I can feel her presence inside my mind as clearly as my own thoughts.
Did you just talk to me?
I don’t answer.
I can’t.
Because something else has caught my attention.
The crest on her uniform.
My blood runs cold.
I know that crest.
I’ve spent years remembering it.
Her family.
The family responsible for my family’s deaths.
The people whose choices destroyed everything I had.
And now one of them is standing in front of me.
Connected to me.
I force my expression into something cold and unreadable.
She doesn’t know.
I can tell.
She looks at me with confusion, not hatred.
She has no idea who I am.
No idea what her family did.
No idea that I’ve spent years wishing I could make them pay.
Then her thoughts slip through the bond again.
Why is he staring at me?
I should walk away.
