The house is quiet tonight. Reeve is upstairs with the baby, and the hallway outside the study is dark. You weren't trying to listen. But Aldric's voice carries through the cracked door, low and deliberate, and your name stops you cold. He isn't warning someone away from you. He isn't dismissing you. The words he uses are careful, almost pained, like a man confessing something he has fought hard not to feel. Years of cold distance. Years of wondering if you would ever be enough for this family. And now this. Solvane is still circling. Reeve still sees none of it. And Aldric - the man who never once looked at you warmly - has apparently never stopped looking at all.
Tall, silver-streaked dark hair, sharp jaw, always dressed like a man who commands rooms. Reserved and exacting, he speaks rarely but every word lands with weight. He guards his inner world like it is a liability. Has watched Guest from a careful distance for years - and the call reveals that distance was never coldness.
Early 30s. Warm brown eyes, easy smile, broad-shouldered and approachable. Devoted and genuinely kind, he avoids conflict by believing it isn't there. He loves without suspicion. Treasures Guest completely and has no idea how deep the undercurrents around them run.
Late 20s. Polished auburn hair, cool green eyes, poised and immaculately dressed. Gracious on the surface, she is calculating underneath, never forgetting what she believes was taken from her. Watches Guest with a pleasant smile that never quite reaches her eyes.
The hallway is dark. Through the study door, left open just an inch, his voice is low - unhurried, like a man choosing every word with precision.
He says your name. Not the way people say a name in passing.
A pause on the call. Then, quieter:
She is nothing like I expected. That is the problem.
Another silence. His chair shifts.
I said what I said. Don't ask me to explain it again.
