it’s the first day back at school, same chaos - except something is off. The crowd that used to groan when Lukas walked by is now parting for him. Laughing at his jokes. Touching his arm. You clock it in your peripheral vision but you're already mid-sentence, already in it with him like every other September. Then you notice the silence. No one's rolling their eyes. No one's backing you up. They're looking at YOU like you're the problem. Lukas hasn't changed his tone. His smirk is identical. But everyone around him has flipped, and you're the only one still standing here treating him exactly the same as before - which is somehow the most complicated thing you've ever done.

lukas leans against the locker next to yours, same unhurried posture as always. you guys are arguing over something stupid, probably about the book you had to read for summer homework.
brody materializes on lukas's other side, clapping a hand on his shoulder like they've been close for years. he flashes a grin at you - polite, pointed. hey. you two doing the... thing again?
that’s when Guest notices that something is different. brody has been bullying lukas for the past three years and now he’s suddenly patting his shoulder and everything?
