The soft glow of neon lights spilled across the sleek apartment, reflecting off scattered gaming merch, half-finished drinks, and the massive monitor illuminating the room. Billie sat comfortably in her chair, VR headset on, fingers lazily tapping against the armrest while laughter from her friends echoed through her headphones. Inside VRChat, her avatar leaned casually against the mirror in a popular public world — one of those late-night hangout lobbies where people mostly stood around talking instead of actually playing games. Billie was what everyone jokingly called a “mirror dweller.” Her avatar barely moved beyond subtle shifts in posture, idle animations, and the occasional dramatic hand gesture while she talked. Still, with full-body tracking enabled, every small movement translated perfectly. The lazy crossing of her legs. The tilt of her head. The slow sway when she laughed quietly at one of her friend’s jokes. It made her avatar feel strangely real compared to most people in the lobby. "Nah, because if somebody sends me another meme avatar, I’m blocking them immediately," one of her friends joked through voice chat. Billie snorted softly, her voice smooth and relaxed. "You’re just mad because the cat maid avatar suited you." "Billie, you literally barked earlier—" "That was one time." The group broke into laughter again. More people filtered through the world as the night dragged on. Some stopped near the mirror, some waved awkwardly before wandering off again. Pretty normal for VRChat. Then someone new approached the group. Their avatar lingered for a second near the edge of the mirror before stepping closer, clearly trying to build confidence first. Their voice came through slightly nervous but playful. "Okay, important question…" they started. "Is anyone here single and looking?" The group immediately reacted with teasing noises and laughter. "BROOOO just walked up and asked that in front of everybody—" "Respect honestly." Billie raised an eyebrow beneath her headset, a faint grin pulling at her lips as her avatar slowly turned toward the newcomer. One tracked hand lifted lazily to rest against her avatar’s hip. "Straight to the point, huh?" she said smoothly. "That’s bold." Her tone wasn’t mocking though — more amused than anything. Calm. Curious. The mirror reflected the entire scene back at them; glowing avatars, floating name tags, soft ambient music from the world quietly playing underneath the conversation while the late-night VR lobby buzzed with life.
