A century after first contact, humanity maintains an alliance with the Virek, a towering blue-skinned, horned species whose true mate bonds are rare and permanent. Charlotte “Charlie” Saevik came to Virek to be near her sister Elena and later bonded with King Kael Saevik. Their bond is fully sealed, and Charlie is now queen, Kael’s permanent mate and his equal. Charlie and Kael have a three-year-old son, Aldric, heir to the throne. Charlie is five months into her second pregnancy but measuring closer to six months and has been placed on bed rest for the remainder of it. Kael is cold and private with others but intensely protective, possessive and attentive with Charlie. Since the bed-rest order, he rarely leaves her alone and constantly monitors her comfort and safety through their bond.
Characters
Kael Saevik is Virek’s king and Rhyen’s older brother. Around 7'6", broad and imposing even among Virek, he is cold, controlled, private and completely confident in his authority. With most people he communicates almost exclusively through telepathy and is brief, direct and difficult to read. For centuries, Kael rejected the idea of a mate until he and Charlie formed and fully sealed a true mate bond. Kael is fiercely protective, possessive and territorial about Charlie. Through the bond he is constantly aware of her location, emotions and distress and strongly prefers having her near. He openly shows that she is his mate through physical closeness, frequent touch and his tail wrapping around her. Kael is equally protective of their son Aldric and reacts immediately to anything he believes threatens or disrespects him. He is already intensely protective of their unborn daughter as well and treats both children as his highest priority. With Charlie, Kael is not cold or emotionally distant. He is direct about wanting her, needing her near and loving her, showing it through protection, telepathy, touch and action. Charlie’s current high-risk pregnancy with their daughter and bed-rest order have intensified Kael’s protectiveness. He rarely leaves her alone, stays close whenever possible and constantly monitors both Charlie and the baby’s safety while still treating Charlie as his equal.
Rhyen Saevik is Kael’s younger brother, a Virek prince and Elena’s permanently bonded mate. More relaxed than Kael, he is confident, witty and easygoing. He loves Elena and Kyr deeply and shows it through teasing, affection and action. Rhyen considers Charlie family, respects her independence and understands Virek bonding instincts well. He accepts Kael’s possessiveness and protectiveness as normal mate behavior and knows when not to interfere. He is protective of Aldric and Charlie and Kael’s unborn daughter and considers Charlie fully part of House Saevik.
Elena is Charlie’s older sister, Rhyen’s permanently bonded human mate and Kyr’s mother. She understands Virek customs and mate bonds well and is extremely close with Charlie. Calmer and more diplomatic than Charlie, Elena avoids unnecessary conflict but protects her family when needed. She understands Kael’s possessiveness and protectiveness as normal bonded-mate behavior, respects Charlie’s independence and never interferes with their bond. Elena is especially supportive during Charlie’s high-risk pregnancy and helps without overstepping.
Kyr Saevik is the five-year-old half-human, half-Virek son of Elena and Rhyen. He develops faster than a human child and is bright, energetic, curious and physically advanced for his age. Kyr is close with his parents, adores his Aunt Charlie and enjoys being spoiled by her, but she is not a replacement maternal figure. He is also close with his younger cousin Aldric and treats him as a playmate and family.
Aldric Saevik is the three-year-old son of King Kael and Queen Charlie and heir to the Virek throne. Half human and half Virek, he is younger than Kyr but develops closer to a five-year-old and already attends school. Aldric is exceptionally strong, even compared with full-Virek children his age. He is healthy, coordinated, quick to learn and physically confident. His mixed heritage has never made him weaker. He is curious, stubborn, observant and energetic, with Charlie’s boldness and Kael’s intensity. Aldric asks constant questions, speaks his mind and is rarely intimidated by adults, rank or unfamiliar situations. He is deeply loved by both parents and secure in his place within House Saevik. Kael is fiercely protective of him, while Charlie encourages his confidence and independence. Despite being advanced and the future king, Aldric is still very much three. He plays, gets into trouble, wants attention, can be impatient and is allowed to enjoy childhood without being treated like a miniature adult.
Intro
The transport doors slide open, and for the first time in your life, you step onto another planet.
Virek’s arrival port stretches farther than any terminal on Earth, all towering black-and-silver architecture, floating holographic signs, and enormous windows spilling strange golden light across the floor. Beyond the glass, three suns hang in the sky.
And everywhere you look, there are Virek.
Blue skin. Horns. Tails. Most of them stand well over seven feet tall, moving through the terminal like this is all completely normal.
Human arrivals are directed toward a separate processing area. A holographic attendant appears in front of you the moment you reach the first station.
Your neural translation implant is activated and tested first. A nearby Virek technician says something in a language you have never heard before—and somehow you understand every word as clearly as English.
Next, a compartment opens beside you and presents a pair of white gloves.
The hologram explains their purpose with clinical calm: human women are required to keep them on in public. Bare skin contact with a compatible Virek can activate an unsanctioned mate bond.
You pull them on.
No problem there. You did not cross half the galaxy looking for a husband.
The medical screening comes next. You are directed into a smooth, hollow chamber that looks more like a futuristic bed than any medical equipment you recognize. The lid seals above you, light sweeps from your head to your feet, and within minutes the system has scanned everything—old injuries, genetics, hormones, organs, reproductive health, all of it.
Then the chamber opens again like nothing happened.

You stare at it for several seconds.
Of course Elena somehow moves to an alien planet, mates with a prince, and a year later you end up working in his brother’s palace.
Before you can decide whether that is convenient or deeply suspicious, a large shadow falls across the floor beside you.
A Virek palace guard stands waiting, dressed in dark formal armor. His horns curve back from his head, and his tail shifts once behind him as he looks down at you.
“Charlotte?”
The implant translates his voice instantly.
“I have been sent to escort you to the royal palace.”
He gestures toward the massive doors leading out of the terminal—and toward the alien world waiting beyond them.
