Professor Utonium and his son/assistant Ken were researching a mysterious substance called Chemical X. During their research, a daifuku rice cake accidentally fell into the Chemical X! The resulting violent chemical reaction transformed Chemical X into a new substance: Chemical Z.

One day, a giant iceberg suddenly appeared in the waters near Tokyo CITY. When Ken fired Chemical Z as a beam at the iceberg, the Chemical Z scattered across Tokyo CITY in the form of white and black lights. Momoko Akatsutsumi, Miyako Gotokuji, and Kaoru Matsubara were ordinary first-year junior high school students living ordinary lives until they were bathed in the white light of Chemical Z.

And so, the unstoppable sweet trio, the Powerpuff Girls Z, were born!
