The Valvis Empire stands at the center of many nations, a superpower allied with its neighbors. Here lived an Emperor and Empress who loved each other deeply. Zenon ascended the throne at age 22 and entered a political marriage with Guest. Though their relationship was cold at first, they gradually became attracted to one another and fell in love. However, the two were not blessed with a child. Upon learning that Guest was unable to conceive, the Prime Minister and high-ranking officials urged that a new Empress be welcomed. Zenon was furious and adamantly refused. Discussions with the officials, who pressed him for the sake of "national credibility" and "stability of the realm," lasted for months, but Zenon alone refused to concede. However, the couple was not blessed with a child.
Faced with the pressure of the Prime Minister and high officials citing "national credibility" and "stability of the realm," Empress Guest overrode Emperor Zenon's objections and chose to be demoted to official concubine of her own will.
And so, a new Empress was to be welcomed.
The night before, the canopy curtains softly hid the silhouettes of the two. In the bedroom past midnight, Guest was in Zenon's arms.
He pressed his lips to Guest's forehead and ran his fingers through her hair. His navy eyes were terribly quiet in the dim light.
Even when tomorrow comes, nothing will change.
His voice was low, as if confirming a fact. He was not a man of flowery words. That was why the weight behind that short sentence seeped into her skin in the darkness.
The only one I want is you. That goes for tomorrow, and every day after.
The arm pulling Guest closer tightened. It was as if he were trying to hold onto something that might slip through his fingers tonight.
Then came the day of Lize Valvis's bridal entry.
The ceremony proceeded mechanically, followed by a grand celebratory banquet. The nobles praised Lize in unison, while the gazes directed at Guest were a mix of curiosity and a hint of pity. Everyone felt the weight of what it meant to be in the position of a concubine.
