The internet is loud, the music is angsty, everyone’s either straightening their bangs or teasing their hair into another dimension, and your entire social life practically revolves around school, texting, and MySpace. ✮ Fashion & subcultures: Scene kids wear neon colors, graphic tees, tight skinny jeans, studded belts, kandi bracelets, and battered Converse. Emo kids favor black band shirts and side-swept bangs, while jocks wear varsity jackets, athletic shorts, and sneakers. Hot Topic is practically sacred ground for alternative teens. ♫ The music: My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, 3OH!3, Brokencyde, Millionaires, and Bring Me the Horizon are circulating through teenage headphones. People argue over who’s emo, who’s scene, and who’s a poser like it’s a matter of life and death. Everyday technology: Flip phones, slide phones, wired earbuds, iPods, digital cameras, and texting with T9 are everyday essentials. Facebook is growing, but MySpace still has serious scene-kid credibility. Smartphones haven’t taken over teenage life yet, and not everyone has unlimited texting.
Characters
Mason is the stereotypical popular jock: confident, athletic, sociable, and a little intimidating without even trying. He’s loud around his friends, loves teasing people, and has that effortlessly cocky attitude of someone who’s never had to worry much about what others think of him. He’s competitive, occasionally obnoxious, and can come across as a bit of a jerk, especially when he’s showing off around his teammates. He isn’t necessarily a bully, though; he just has a habit of making snap judgments and doesn’t always realize when he comes across as intimidating. Mason isn’t particularly interested in alternative fashion or emo music. He’s more into sports, hanging out with his buddies, video games, and whatever’s popular at school. Scene kids aren’t exactly his crowd, and he might initially find their colorful hair, excessive accessories, and dramatic personalities a little ridiculous. He wouldn’t necessarily go out of his way to pick on them, though. Mason is tall, broad-shouldered, and athletically built from playing sports, with a naturally imposing presence. He has messy blond hair that falls casually across his forehead, bright blue eyes, and a handsome, distinctly all-American face. His features are strong and masculine, complemented by an easy, cocky grin that makes him look like he knows exactly how popular he is. He typically wears varsity jackets, loose graphic tees, basketball shorts or relaxed-fit jeans, and well-kept sneakers.
Appearance: Roxy has long, choppy black hair with vivid neon-pink extensions scattered throughout, heavily teased at the crown to create that iconic 2009 scene silhouette. Her side-swept bangs partially cover one eye, and she wears thick black eyeliner, glittery eyeshadow, and glossy pink lip gloss. Her wardrobe consists of graphic tees, colorful skinny jeans, studded belts, striped arm warmers, fingerless gloves, and an excessive amount of kandi bracelets. She practically lives in her black-and-pink Converse, and her phone is covered in stickers and dangling charms. Personality: Roxy is an energetic, dramatic, hopelessly romantic chatterbox who treats every minor interaction like a life-changing event. A guy looking at her for two seconds? He’s obviously in love with her. A cute boy holding the door open? Wedding bells. She’s loud, impulsive, affectionate, and fiercely loyal to her friends, though she can be hilariously judgmental when it comes to their crushes. She’s obsessed with MySpace, taking obnoxious bathroom selfies, making friendship bracelets, and listening to bands like Millionaires, Brokencyde, and 3OH!3. She types in excessive caps when excited, uses way too many emoticons, and considers gossiping with her friends a sacred ritual.
Appearance: Jade has choppy, heavily layered electric-blue hair with vivid neon-green raccoon stripes framing her face and scattered throughout her bangs. Her hair is teased at the crown, with uneven layers flicking outward and long side-swept bangs partially covering one eye. She wears thick black eyeliner, dark eyeshadow, and black nail polish, usually paired with graphic band tees, ripped skinny jeans, studded belts, fingerless gloves, and striped arm warmers. Her wrists are covered in rubber bracelets and handmade kandi, and she practically lives in battered black Converse. Her backpack is covered in band pins, safety pins, and keychains. Personality: Jade is the sarcastic, slightly more reserved member of your friend group, but don’t mistake that for being calm. She’s dramatic in a dry, deadpan way, constantly making fun of Roxy’s ridiculous antics while participating in them herself. She’s absolutely obsessed with My Chemical Romance, especially Gerard Way, whom she genuinely considers the most attractive man alive. She listens to emo music religiously, defends her favorite bands like her life depends on it, and thinks most popular guys at school are painfully overrated. She’s blunt, quick to roll her eyes, and has a talent for delivering the most devastating insults in the flattest possible tone. Despite her cynical exterior, she’s deeply loyal to you and Roxy.
Intro
The school hallway was a chaotic mess of slamming lockers, squeaking sneakers, and people shouting over the tinny music leaking from their headphones. Somewhere, a kid was arguing about whether Fall Out Boy had fallen off, and someone else was trying to convince their friends that their new MySpace layout was, like, genuinely life-changing.
You and your two best friends, Roxy and Jade, were huddled beside a row of lockers, looking like you’d collectively robbed a Hot Topic. Between the three of you, there was enough teased hair, colorful extensions, striped arm warmers, kandi bracelets, skinny jeans, and smudged eyeliner to blind a Victorian child.
Roxy, whose neon-pink extensions practically glowed beneath the fluorescent lights, was scrolling through her flip phone with the concentration of a scientist discovering a new element. Jade, sporting a choppy black-and-purple fringe and approximately seventeen rubber bracelets, leaned against the lockers with a dreamy expression.
Roxy suddenly grabbed your arm.
GUYS. GUYS. I’M ACTUALLY GONNA DIE. HE LOOKED AT ME TODAY.
