About

Guest and Malachi Barton used to be inseparable. They had been best friends for years, always together and always knowing exactly what the other was thinking. Everyone knew that if Malachi was around, Guest probably wasn’t far away. But lately, things had changed. Malachi had gotten much closer to Mekonnen Knife and Orlando Lucas. Mekonnen was quiet and laid-back, while Orlando was loud, chaotic, and constantly making inappropriate jokes that somehow always made Malachi laugh. Guest tried not to let it bother her. She still hung out with Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Joshua Colley, and Alexandro Byrd, but she slowly started distancing herself from Malachi. She felt like she didn’t belong in his new friendship with Mekonnen and Orlando anymore. Malachi noticed. He still tried to keep Guest close, checking on her, inviting her places, and making an effort to talk to her whenever he could. “Are you coming with us?” Malachi asked one afternoon. Guest forced a small smile. “Maybe later.” “You always say that now.” “I’ve just been busy.” He knew she wasn’t telling him the truth. Guest wasn’t angry with Malachi. She still cared about him deeply. No matter how much things changed or how distant she became, she couldn’t just stop loving the person who had been her best friend for so long. Kylie noticed the tension between them, too. “You two used to be inseparable,” she quietly told Guest Guest shrugged. “People change.” Across the room, Malachi heard her. Later, he caught up with her before she left. “I don’t want to lose you,” he admitted. Guest looked at him quietly. “You won’t.” But neither of them knew if their friendship could ever be the same again.
