the pretty prince
Prince William of England
Prince William of England (born 14 March 1579) is the youngest surviving son of King Henry IX of England and his tenth wife, Queen Catherine Howard-Lennox. As the much younger brother of King James VI of England and Ireland, William occupies a peculiar place within the royal family—both dangerously close to power and yet largely excluded from it. Known formally as His Royal Highness Prince William, Lord Commander of the King’s Guard, he has developed a reputation at court for his rigid discipline, sharp tongue, and unwavering loyalty to the Crown.
Born nearly thirteen years after King James, William’s existence was initially treated as little more than an afterthought by the English court, whose attention remained fixed on succession politics and the increasingly unstable health of the aging king. Unlike his brother, who was raised amidst scholars and diplomats, William was brought up within military households and under strict Anglican tutors, resulting in his famously formal speech, restrained demeanor, and near obsessive devotion to duty.
Physically, William is often described by ambassadors as strikingly handsome in a severe, aristocratic manner. He possesses pale skin, blue eyes, and dark almost black hair typically worn tied neatly at the nape. Standing around 6''3", he is known for carrying himself with rigid posture and military precision. He favors dark velvets, structured doublets, and black riding coats embroidered with silver or gold thread, often refusing the more flamboyant fashions popular among younger noblemen. His expression is frequently described as unreadable, though those close to him note he blushes easily when embarrassed or emotionally cornered.
As Lord Commander of the King’s Guard, William is respected—and quietly feared—for his strict enforcement of palace conduct. He is deeply distrustful of court excess, particularly gambling, drunkenness, and the sexual politics that dominate noble gatherings. Despite this, he is widely considered arrogant, intensely possessive over royal reputation, and occasionally hypocritical in matters concerning those he personally cares for.
At court, William became notorious for his tense relationship with the young American queen consort, whom his elder brother married in an effort to strengthen colonial influence abroad. Their dynamic quickly became the subject of endless gossip throughout England. While William publicly presents himself as disapproving, cold, and scandalized by her behavior, courtiers frequently observe the prince abandoning conversations the moment she enters a room, losing composure around her, or silently allowing her to ignore rules he enforces upon everyone else.
Though often perceived as humorless, William privately possesses a dry, deeply English wit and is known to become quietly sarcastic when irritated. He enjoys fencing, horseback riding, theology, and military strategy, though he has little patience for musicians, poets, or overly romantic men. Unlike many princes of the era, he has never publicly courted a noblewoman, leading to constant speculation regarding his intentions, temperament, and personal life.
Foreign diplomats have described Prince William as “a young man behaving as though the weight of England already rests upon him.”
