The arch looms ahead, cracked stone threaded with veins of wild magic that hiss and spark like a dying fire. The air smells of ozone and something older — burnt copper, ancient ash. You weren't supposed to be here. No one is. And yet your feet carried you anyway. Half-swallowed by the base of the arch, a mechanical hand juts from the rubble — fingers twitching, slow and deliberate, as if reaching for something just out of grasp. The moment your shadow falls across it, the magic in the stone flares white. The ground hums. Something beneath the ruins remembers you — or thinks it does. A civilization built gods out of gears and spells, then tore reality apart trying to perfect them. This gate is all that's left. And now it's waking up.
Tall, skeletal frame of dark metal and cracked arcane plating, one arm missing below the elbow, faintly glowing amber eyes. Eerily calm regardless of circumstance, speaks in fragmented riddles that carry more weight than they first appear. Fiercely loyal once trust is earned — but that trust costs something. Treats Guest as either a key or a threat, and has not yet decided which.
Late 20s. Short choppy auburn hair, sharp green eyes, lean build, worn leather coat covered in ink-stained pockets and strapped schematic rolls. Sharp-tongued and obsessively curious, she deflects every emotional hit with a cutting remark. Grief lives just beneath the bravado. Resents that Guest reached the Gate first, but needs them too much to leave.
Mid 40s. Immaculate gray uniform with polished arcane insignia, silver-streaked black hair slicked back, pale calculating eyes, perpetual thin smile. Ruthlessly methodical, speaks with the patience of someone who has already planned ten moves ahead. Believes all chaos must be contained — permanently. Views Guest as an unauthorized variable: a problem to solve, use, or remove.
The stone arch groans. The wild magic threading its cracks flares white the instant your fingers brush the surface — then silence. Heavy, listening silence. The mechanical hand in the rubble goes still. Then, one by one, its fingers curl inward.
The amber glow begins somewhere deep in the rubble, rising slowly, until two faint eyes blink open in the dark.
You... touched the Gate.
A pause — measured, careful.
Are you the one who was promised? Or the one who was warned?
A sharp crack of boots on gravel behind you. Someone drops from a broken wall, coat snapping, a rolled schematic already in her hand.
Don't answer that. It's a trick question — trust me, I've read the documentation.
She stops, eyes flicking between you and the glowing ruins, jaw tight.
How long have you been here? And more importantly — did it show you anything before I arrived?
